A fire and possible explosion struck the Shahran Oil Depot in Tehran on 17 August, spewing thick black smoke that was visible across the Iranian capital, according to footage released by the semi-official Tasnim news agency. Fars News Agency said “large amounts of petroleum and oil materials” were burning at the site, while state authorities confirmed an oil warehouse was ablaze. Emergency services deployed firefighting crews to contain the blaze. As of late afternoon local time, officials had not reported any casualties or offered a cause for the incident, and the scale of the damage to the storage facility remained unclear. The depot fire is the latest in a series of unexplained industrial accidents reported in Iran since the end of the brief war with Israel earlier this year. Authorities said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the blaze.
