The Israel Defense Forces said it detected a ballistic missile fired from Yemen on 22 August, setting off air-raid sirens across Tel Aviv and other central districts. Air defences launched several interceptors, and an initial military review indicated the projectile fragmented in mid-air before reaching its target. Channel 12 television and emergency services reported that debris landed near a home in the Modiin area, west of Jerusalem. While no direct strike was recorded, paramedics treated several people injured while rushing to shelters. Civil aviation authorities briefly closed Ben Gurion International Airport as a precaution, later reopening the airspace after the alert was lifted. Earlier in the day, the IDF said fighter jets, helicopters and Iron Dome batteries intercepted an unmanned aerial vehicle launched from Yemen, triggering alerts along the Gaza border and the Egypt–Israel frontier. Yemen’s Houthi-aligned armed forces subsequently claimed responsibility for a separate strike, saying they had fired a “Palestine 2” hypersonic missile at Ben Gurion Airport and carried out drone attacks on sites in Tel Aviv and Ashkelon. The assertions, involving a weapon type previously linked to Iran, have not been independently verified. The incidents mark the latest in a series of drone and missile launches from Yemen toward Israel this month.
