The Freedom Flotilla Coalition launched a new humanitarian mission to Gaza with the departure of the aid ship "Handala" on July 13, 2025, from the Italian port of Syracuse. The vessel, named after the iconic Palestinian political cartoon character Handala, aims to challenge Israel's naval blockade on the Gaza Strip and deliver essential humanitarian supplies including medical aid, food, and baby essentials. The ship carries approximately 15 to 20 activists, including French MPs Emma Fourreau and Gabrielle Cathala from La France Insoumise, as well as doctors and lawyers. This mission follows the June attempt involving the vessel "Madleen," which was detained and deported by Israeli authorities. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has emphasized its ongoing commitment to breaking the siege on Gaza through global solidarity. The "Handala" flotilla is expected to take around five days to reach Gaza. The departure comes amid reports of Israel ordering Palestinians to concentrate in a camp in Rafah, a move critics have described as a potential prelude to ethnic cleansing. The mission seeks not only to deliver aid but also to send a message of solidarity with the Palestinian people and to challenge what the coalition calls an illegal and deadly blockade.
