An analysis of recent satellite imagery carried out for Israeli newspaper Haaretz indicates that physical destruction across the Gaza Strip is substantially worse than previously estimated, rendering roughly 70% of all buildings uninhabitable. The review, which combines commercial satellite data with assessments from urban-planning experts, finds that about 89% of structures in the southern city of Rafah and 84% in northern Gaza have been completely or partially destroyed. In Gaza City, the share of buildings damaged or demolished stands at 78%. Haaretz estimates that since April 2025 the Israeli army has been razing roughly 2,000 buildings each month in Rafah alone. According to the report, Israeli civilian contractors working under military supervision are carrying out much of the demolition work and are being paid about 5,000 shekels (approximately US$1,350) for every building they level. The contractors have allegedly pressed the military to widen the areas designated for clearance.
