Israeli daily Haaretz has published an investigative report detailing what it describes as routine malnutrition, disease and violence against Palestinian detainees held at Megiddo Prison in northern Israel. Testimonies collected by the paper say food is so scarce that inmates lose dangerous amounts of weight, while scabies, intestinal illnesses and other untreated conditions spread through the facility. The investigation highlights the case of Ibrahim, a 16-year-old who was released after eight months when a parole board warned that his ‘life-threatening underweight’ condition made continued detention impossible. He told Haaretz he suffered recurring scabies infections, intestinal disease and beatings by guards. The newspaper also documented the recent death of a 17-year-old prisoner who, according to affidavits, experienced similar neglect. Beyond Megiddo, Haaretz said at least 73 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons and detention centers since the Gaza war erupted last year. Human-rights lawyers quoted in the article are urging an independent inquiry into prison conditions and the conduct of the Israel Prison Service. Israeli officials have not publicly responded to the findings.
