Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement warned on Saturday that it will attack U.S. naval and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait if Washington takes part in Israeli military operations against Iran. The threat was delivered in a televised statement by the group’s military spokesman, Brigadier-General Yahya Saree. Saree said that “any American attack and aggression that supports the Israeli enemy against Iran cannot be ignored,” pledging that Houthi forces would “target its ships and warships in the Red Sea.” The warning signals a possible resumption of the maritime campaign that disrupted a key global trade artery before an Oman-mediated cease-fire between the Houthis and the United States came into force in early May. The declaration raises the stakes in a region already unsettled by open hostilities between Israel and Iran and by speculation over potential U.S. involvement. Roughly 15 percent of world seaborne commerce transits the Red Sea; previous Houthi attacks on shipping led the United States and the United Kingdom to launch retaliatory air strikes and prompted Washington to redesignate the group as a terrorist organization in March. U.S. officials have not yet responded publicly to the latest threat. Analysts warn that renewed Houthi attacks could jeopardize energy shipments, further inflate insurance costs for vessels transiting the waterway and widen the conflict beyond Israel and Iran.
