International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi said he has formally asked Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for an early meeting to restart cooperation on Tehran’s nuclear programme. Grossi, writing after a 24 June ceasefire between Iran and Israel, called renewed collaboration with the agency “key to a successful agreement” and urged the immediate resumption of verification activities that have been curtailed for more than a year. Speaking again on 25 July, Grossi told reporters that Iran had “indicated it will be ready to restart some conversations at the technical level,” but stressed that full transparency is required. He said Tehran must clarify the status of “multiple facilities and activities” and allow inspectors to visit sites, including some that were damaged during recent hostilities, in line with its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Grossi added that rebuilding normal ties with Iran is essential before broader diplomatic negotiations can advance, suggesting technical discussions could precede higher-level talks. No timeline has been set, but the agency is preparing to address safety precautions at damaged locations and to verify Iran’s declared nuclear material once access is restored.
