Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran will resume cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency only if the UN watchdog ends what he called “double-standard” treatment of Iran’s nuclear program, according to state media reports on Thursday. Pezeshkian delivered the message during a phone call with European Council President Antonio Costa. Costa reiterated the European Union’s backing for the IAEA as the sole body able to verify the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear activities and urged Tehran to allow inspectors to return. Relations between Iran and the agency deteriorated after the Iranian parliament passed a bill on 25 June suspending all collaboration with the IAEA in response to what Tehran described as biased reporting by Director General Rafael Grossi. The last IAEA inspectors left Iran on 4 July. Tensions have intensified since US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in mid-June, attacks that prompted a 12-day exchange of fire. Pezeshkian warned that any renewed aggression would be met with a “more decisive” response but said Iran remains committed to dialogue provided the agency addresses its concerns.
