Iran's Revolutionary Court in Urmia has sentenced five Kurdish men detained during the 2022 "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests to death. The condemned individuals—Ali (Soran) Qasemi, Pejman Soltani, Kaveh Salehi, Rezgar Bigzadeh Babamiri, and Tifour Salimi Babamiri—were accused of killing a Basij member and charged with "rebellion" and "enmity against God." Collectively, they received a total of 12 death sentences and 75 years of imprisonment. Additionally, eight other defendants in the case were given prison terms and fines. The court proceedings reportedly lacked fair trial standards, including denial of access to chosen legal counsel and allegations of torture and forced confessions. Separately, in Ahvaz, three political prisoners—Farshad Etemadifar, Masoud Jamei, and Alireza Mardasi—were each sentenced to two death sentences and one year in prison on charges of "corruption on earth" and membership in opposition groups. Two other defendants in this case received a combined 27 years of imprisonment. These verdicts represent some of the harshest sentences issued recently in Iran's southwestern Khuzestan province. Human rights organizations have reported multiple executions in various Iranian prisons in recent weeks, including cases involving drug-related offenses and murder. The Supreme Court of Iran has also rejected a fourth retrial request for political prisoner Mehdi Hasani, who remains on death row in Ghezelhesar Prison.
