The Norwegian Nobel Committee said on Friday that Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian human-rights activist who won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, has reported receiving death threats from individuals she identified as agents of Iran’s security apparatus. Committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes told reporters he received an “urgent phone call” from Mohammadi in which she warned that she had been threatened with “physical elimination” if she continued her advocacy for democracy and human rights. Mohammadi, 52, is serving a lengthy prison sentence in Tehran’s Evin Prison for charges linked to her long-standing campaign against compulsory hijab laws and the death penalty. The committee said it is “deeply concerned” for her safety and called on Iranian authorities to guarantee her physical integrity and release her immediately. There was no immediate response from Iran’s judiciary or security services to the allegations.
