An Iranian lawmaker told the state-affiliated Defapress news agency that the Majlis can swiftly ratify a bill withdrawing the country from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if the United Nations Security Council triggers the snapback mechanism to restore multilateral sanctions. The warning underscores Tehran’s efforts to deter further pressure as nuclear negotiations with Western powers remain stalled. Iran has already limited international inspections under the 2015 accord but has stayed within the NPT framework, which obliges it to allow oversight by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Separately, Iran’s deputy foreign minister criticised the IAEA for what he called its silence over recent Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, adding to tensions between Tehran and the agency. A withdrawal from the NPT would end the remaining legally binding inspections regime and heighten proliferation concerns across the Middle East.
