Israel’s military said its air-defence network shot down a ballistic missile launched from Yemen on 1 July, triggering nationwide alerts and a brief closure of Israeli airspace. Sirens sounded in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other central districts, and Ben Gurion airport halted traffic while the Arrow system intercepted the projectile outside the atmosphere. No casualties or damage were reported. Yahya Saree, spokesperson for Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement, claimed responsibility for the launch, calling it part of the group’s campaign in support of Gaza. The attack follows a similar incident on 28 June, when a missile aimed at the southern city of Beersheba was “most likely successfully intercepted,” according to the Israel Defense Forces. The Houthis, who control much of Yemen, have fired dozens of missiles and drones at Israel and at Red Sea shipping since the Gaza war erupted in October 2023. Israel has warned it may impose a naval and air blockade on Yemen if the cross-border assaults continue.
