Israeli forces seized the Gaza-bound aid vessel Handala in international waters on July 26, 2025, detaining 21 activists from 10 countries who were attempting to breach the Israeli maritime blockade of Gaza. The detainees have refused Israeli deportation orders and many have initiated hunger strikes in protest against their detention. Reports from the activists describe abuse while in Israeli custody. The detained individuals have called on their respective governments to intervene and secure their release. Human rights activists, including Lebanese-Australian filmmaker Tan Safi and model and activist Alana Hadid, have publicly supported the cause, emphasizing the need for direct action and justice for Palestine. Additionally, Ahmed Uwtaida, a colleague of the World Health Organization detained in Gaza on July 20, remains in custody, with calls from WHO leadership for his release. The situation continues to draw attention amid ongoing tensions surrounding the blockade and humanitarian access to Gaza.
We ask #Israel to release our colleague, Ahmed Uwtaida, who was detained at our guest house in #Gaza on July 20th.
