Israeli forces detained 21 pro-Palestinian activists and journalists from 10 countries aboard the Gaza-bound Handala aid boat after intercepting it in international waters on Saturday. The vessel was attempting to breach the Israeli maritime blockade of Gaza when it was seized. The detained activists have called on their respective governments to intervene and secure their release. Many of those held have refused to comply with Israeli deportation orders and have initiated a hunger strike in protest against their detention and alleged mistreatment, including reports of abuse. Among the detainees is American labor activist and Handala volunteer Christian Smalls, who sustained visible injuries upon arrival in Israel. The incident has sparked demonstrations in Paris, where over 300 people gathered to demand the release of the Handala crew members. Lebanese-Australian filmmaker and human rights activist Tan Safi, a crew member, has spoken publicly about the mission to break the Gaza siege. Meanwhile, in Egypt, detainees in New Valley prison have also begun a hunger strike protesting harsh treatment and prolonged pretrial detention. Additionally, six young Egyptians remain in custody after being charged with spreading false news and disturbing public order related to pro-Palestinian support banners, with their families calling for their release following President Sisi's recent statements supporting the Palestinian cause.
