Thousands of Muslim worshipers converged on Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on 11 July for the weekly Friday prayers, responding to calls to bolster attendance at the holy site. Israeli police deployed checkpoints through the Old City’s narrow streets, stopping congregants, searching them and inspecting identity papers before allowing entry to the compound. Despite the security screening, prayers proceeded in the mosque’s courtyards and the Qibli prayer hall without major disturbances.
