Two senior far-right members of Israel’s cabinet have publicly called for the assassination of Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa. Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli on 15 July branded al-Sharaa “a terrorist, a barbaric murderer who should be eliminated now,” while National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir repeated the demand a day later, saying “the only thing to do with Julani is to eliminate him… we need to cut off the head of the snake.” The incendiary comments follow days of violence in the Druze-majority province of Sweida, where armed Druze groups and Bedouin tribes clashed after a dispute over seized vehicles. Local medical and security sources report at least 30 fatalities and roughly 100 injuries. Subsequent attacks on government convoys left 18 Syrian soldiers dead and nine captured, prompting Damascus to rush reinforcements to the south before a cease-fire was declared on 16 July, according to Syrian Defense Minister Maj. Gen. Merhef Abu Kasra. Israel has become increasingly involved around Sweida. Defense Minister Yisrael Katz pledged that Israel “will not stand by” if Druze civilians are harmed, and the Israel Defense Forces carried out five airstrikes near Syrian Defense and Interior Ministry columns positioned around the province. Thousands of Israeli Druze have staged protests demanding protection for relatives across the border. The calls by Chikli and Ben-Gvir to remove al-Sharaa mark a sharp escalation in Israeli rhetoric toward Damascus and risk inflaming already volatile Israeli-Syrian relations. The remarks also complicate a U.S.-backed effort to normalise ties between the two countries, launched after Washington lifted sanctions on al-Sharaa’s transitional government earlier this year.
