Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araqchi on 6 July on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, renewing Moscow’s offer to help resolve disputes over Tehran’s nuclear programme. In a statement cited by Reuters, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Lavrov condemned last month’s Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iranian territory, including damage to International Atomic Energy Agency-monitored facilities, and emphasised that all nuclear-related issues should be settled through diplomacy. Moscow reiterated earlier proposals, including storing Iranian uranium, as part of a potential settlement. Iran’s nuclear file dominated many of the summit’s bilateral meetings. Araqchi also held separate talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, both of whom reviewed regional security after the latest hostilities targeting Iran. Jaishankar, preparing for India’s 2026 BRICS presidency, met Lavrov to discuss West Asia and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation matters, and spoke with Mexico’s foreign secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente about widening cooperation in health, digital technology and space. The diplomatic flurry highlights the enlarged 11-member BRICS bloc’s bid to shape responses to Middle East tensions and other global issues.
