Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency during a BRICS meeting on 7 July, saying recent IAEA reports created the impression that Iran was failing to meet its nuclear commitments. Lavrov urged the Vienna-based watchdog to avoid politicization, take responsibility for what he called “ambiguous assessments,” and offer guarantees that its findings will not be used to advance unilateral interests of individual member states. He also demanded that the agency provide security assurances for Iranian nuclear facilities under its supervision, arguing that the sites need protection commensurate with the IAEA’s oversight role.
