Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that his government will allow Palestinians to leave the Gaza Strip, describing the move as an option "during and after" ongoing hostilities. In a televised interview with Israel’s i24NEWS, Netanyahu stated that civilians should be able to leave combat zones and, if they choose, depart the enclave entirely. Israel tightly controls Gaza’s crossings and has rarely permitted large‐scale outward movement since Hamas seized control of the territory in 2007. Netanyahu’s remarks follow his earlier pledge to establish protected corridors for humanitarian aid distribution and to admit additional foreign reporters to designated safe areas inside Gaza. The measures, announced over the weekend, are intended to coincide with a broader military offensive that Israel says is aimed at dismantling remaining Hamas strongholds. Israeli Channel 12 reported that Jerusalem has begun exploratory talks with South Sudan and other third countries about accepting Gazans who wish to relocate. Previous proposals to resettle Gaza’s population abroad have drawn sharp criticism from Palestinian leaders and concern from international organisations, which fear a mass displacement reminiscent of past conflicts in the region. The latest announcements come amid mounting pressure from foreign governments and aid agencies to address severe shortages of food, water and medical supplies in Gaza, where most of the 2.4 million residents have been displaced at least once since the war reopened in October 2023. While Israel says the new corridors will facilitate relief efforts, humanitarian groups insist broader access and a sustained cease-fire are needed to avert famine and further civilian casualties.
