The U.S. State Department on 2 July called Iran’s decision to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency “unacceptable,” saying Tehran must reverse course immediately. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters that Iran “must cooperate fully without further delay,” including by giving the IAEA access and information needed to resolve questions about undeclared nuclear material and a newly announced enrichment site. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian earlier the same day signed into law a bill passed by parliament on 25 June that halts collaboration with the UN watchdog. The measure was adopted after a 12-day conflict in June during which Israeli and U.S. strikes damaged several Iranian nuclear facilities. Washington said it remains determined to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and urged Tehran to use what it described as a window of opportunity to return to compliance and “choose a path of peace and prosperity.”
