Palestinian teacher and community leader Awdah Hathaleen was shot and killed on Monday in the West Bank village of Umm al-Khair. Witnesses told Reuters the 31-year-old, who consulted on the Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land,” was struck by gunfire as residents tried to stop a bulldozer from damaging their property. Israeli police said an Israeli civilian opened fire after rocks were allegedly thrown at settlers near the neighbouring Carmel settlement. The suspected shooter, identified by local residents as Yinon Levi—an activist previously sanctioned by the United States—was detained at the scene and later placed under house arrest by a Jerusalem court until Friday while the investigation continues. Four Palestinians and two foreign tourists were also taken into custody, the police added. Hathaleen’s death has drawn condemnation from rights groups and the filmmaking community. The educator had travelled internationally to highlight settler violence but was turned back at San Francisco International Airport last month despite holding a valid visa for an inter-faith speaking tour. Settler attacks have intensified since Israel’s war with Hamas erupted in Gaza in late 2023. United Nations data show at least 962 Palestinians and 36 Israelis have been killed in West Bank violence over that period. About 700,000 Israelis now live in settlements across the territory, which is home to 2.7 million Palestinians and remains under military occupation.
