The Atlanta Braves have placed 25-year-old right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to 29 June, after imaging revealed a small fracture in his pitching elbow. Schwellenbach reported tightness following his seven-inning outing against Philadelphia on Saturday and will be shut down from throwing for four weeks, with the club hoping he can rejoin the rotation in September. To cover the loss, Atlanta recalled left-hander Austin Cox from Triple-A Gwinnett. The club also designated outfielder Alex Verdugo for assignment, activated reliever Daysbel Hernandez from the injured list and optioned right-hander Kevin Herget. Schwellenbach joins a crowded injured list that already includes Chris Sale, Reynaldo López and AJ Smith-Shawver. In 17 starts this season, Schwellenbach has delivered a 3.09 ERA and 6.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio, contributing an estimated 1.7 Wins Above Replacement. The Braves entered 2 July at 38-46, fourth in the National League East and 7½ games out of the final wild-card berth, as a string of injuries continues to test their depth.
