Baltimore Orioles catcher Maverick Handley sustained a concussion during Sunday’s game against the New York Yankees after colliding at home plate with Jazz Chisholm Jr. while attempting to tag the runner in the second inning. Handley left the game immediately and was evaluated by team medical staff. The Orioles on Monday placed Handley on the seven-day concussion injured list and purchased the contract of catcher Chadwick Tromp from Triple-A Norfolk to serve as Gary Sánchez’s backup. To clear a 40-man roster spot, first baseman Ryan Mountcastle—out since late May—was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Handley’s injury further depletes Baltimore’s catching depth; All-Star Adley Rutschman has been sidelined since June 10 with a strained left oblique. Handley, recalled to replace Rutschman, was hitting .073 in 41 at-bats before the collision.
