British actor Marisa Abela has joined Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe in Amazon MGM Studios’ new feature-length remake of the 1986 cult film “Highlander,” the companies and industry publications announced on Wednesday. The project is being produced through Amazon-owned United Artists and will be directed by “John Wick” filmmaker Chad Stahelski from a screenplay by Michael Finch. Production is scheduled to begin in September, with shooting planned in Scotland, England and Hong Kong. Amazon and UA hold full rights to the original property and are eyeing a theatrical release, with executives also exploring franchise and series opportunities. Abela, who recently won a 2025 BAFTA TV Award for her performance in HBO/BBC drama “Industry,” will portray a newly created immortal character who teaches swordplay and shares a past romance with Cavill’s Connor MacLeod. Crowe is set to play Ramirez, the mentor role originated by Sean Connery. Abela’s casting follows her recent appearances in Steven Soderbergh’s spy thriller “Black Bag” and as Amy Winehouse in the biopic “Back to Black.”
