Amazon MGM Studios has lined up Ryan Gosling and Will Ferrell to headline “Tough Guys,” an action-comedy about two disposable henchmen who rebel against their criminal bosses and try to remake their lives. The project originated as a spec script by Toronto-born writer and producer Daniel Gold. Gosling and Jessie Henderson are in talks to produce through Gosling’s Open Invite Entertainment, which holds a first-look deal with Amazon MGM. Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum are expected to produce via Gloria Sanchez Productions, with Trevor Engelson and Aaron Folbe in discussions to executive-produce for Underground. A director has not yet been named, and the studio has not announced a production timeline. The film extends Amazon MGM’s strategy of pairing marquee talent with mid-budget comedies for its theatrical-and-streaming pipeline. Gosling, who next appears in the studio’s adaptation of “Project Hail Mary,” is also attached to “Star Wars: Starfighter.” Ferrell recently wrapped “You’re Cordially Invited” for Amazon MGM and has “Judgment Day” and “Street Justice” in development elsewhere.
