Magnolia Pictures on 16 July released the first trailer for “It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley,” an authorised feature documentary directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg. The film uses never-before-seen archival footage, personal voice messages and new interviews with the late singer’s mother, Mary Guibert, former partners Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser, bandmates Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred, and contemporaries such as Aimee Mann and Ben Harper to chart Buckley’s brief yet influential career. The picture premiered to strong notices at January’s Sundance Film Festival and currently holds a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Berg, who spent almost two decades securing access to the Buckley estate, situates the artist’s 1994 debut album “Grace,” his avant-garde New York beginnings and his complicated relationship with his father, folk musician Tim Buckley, against the backdrop of his accidental drowning in 1997 at age 30. Magnolia will open the documentary in select U.S. cinemas on 8 August, with a national roll-out to follow. A streaming window on HBO Max is planned for the winter, expanding access to what Berg calls “the first comprehensive portrait” of a vocalist many peers still describe as one of the finest of his generation.
