The University of Notre Dame has chosen redshirt freshman CJ Carr as its starting quarterback for the 2025 season. Head coach Marcus Freeman made the decision after a training-camp competition between Carr and sophomore Kenny Minchey, concluding the evaluation that began in spring practice. Carr, a former four-star recruit ranked No. 6 among quarterbacks in the 2024 class, saw action in just one game last year while backing up Riley Leonard and Steve Angeli. The 19-year-old pocket passer is the grandson of former Michigan national-championship coach Lloyd Carr. Notre Dame finished the 2024 campaign 14-2, falling just short in the national title game. The Fighting Irish open the new season against Miami on Aug. 31 in a prime-time matchup at 7:30 p.m. Eastern, with Carr now set to lead an offense that also returns running backs Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price.
