A tour bus carrying 54 people from Niagara Falls to New York City veered off Interstate 90 near Pembroke, about 30 miles east of Buffalo, and rolled into a ditch early Friday afternoon, killing five adults and injuring dozens of other passengers, according to the New York State Police. State Police Major Andre Ray said the driver, who survived and is cooperating, appears to have become distracted before over-correcting; preliminary findings ruled out mechanical failure and impairment. Every passenger sustained at least minor injuries, and more than 40 were taken to regional hospitals by ground ambulances and six medical-evacuation helicopters. Many victims were ejected because they were not wearing seatbelts, officials added. Most travellers on the bus, operated by Staten Island–based M&Y Tour Inc., were of Indian, Chinese or Filipino nationality and ranged in age from one to 74. The National Transportation Safety Board has deployed a team to investigate. The crash shut the Thruway in both directions between exits 48A and 49 for several hours, and Governor Kathy Hochul said her office is coordinating assistance for those affected.
