NFL clubs began paring their preseason rosters on Monday and Tuesday as the league’s 4 p.m. ET deadline approached for submitting the initial 53-man lists that will open the 2025 regular season. The San Francisco 49ers executed one of the day’s most sweeping shake-ups, waiving or releasing at least 13 players. The departures include veteran running back Jeff Wilson Jr., wide receivers Robbie Chosen and Russell Gage Jr., punter Thomas Morstead, cornerback Fabian Moreau and several depth linebackers and linemen. Most are eligible to return on the practice squad if they clear waivers. Elsewhere, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers moved on from four-year backup quarterback Kyle Trask, while the Chicago Bears freed up 11 slots but activated starting cornerback Jaylon Johnson ahead of the cutoff. The Miami Dolphins, Washington Commanders and Arizona Cardinals also shed players in batches as they finalized their depth charts. Teams can begin building 16-man practice squads at noon ET Wednesday after the waiver-claim period closes, meaning released players could still circle back to their original clubs or find new homes before the first kickoff in September.
