The Cleveland Browns closed out the NFL preseason against the Los Angeles Rams with rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel strengthening his case for a roster spot while fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders faltered in his return from an oblique injury. Gabriel relieved starter Joe Flacco and engineered an 11-play, 86-yard touchdown drive in 1 minute 38 seconds just before halftime. He finished 12-of-19 for 129 yards and a touchdown, posting a 101.0 passer rating and avoiding any sacks. Sanders, who missed last week’s game, entered in the second half but completed only 3-of-6 passes for 14 yards and was sacked five times, including a 24-yard loss. Across two preseason appearances, the fifth-round pick went 17-of-29 for 152 yards and two touchdowns. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has already named the 40-year-old Flacco his Week 1 starter. With NFL teams required to trim rosters to 53 players next week, Gabriel’s efficiency and Sanders’ struggles sharpen the competition for the remaining quarterback slots alongside Kenny Pickett.
