Prominent Miami defense attorney Roy Black, best known for winning the 1991 acquittal of William Kennedy Smith on rape charges, has died at age 80, his law firm said Tuesday. Black passed away Monday at his home in Coral Gables, Florida; no cause of death was given. During a five-decade career, Black represented a series of headline-making clients, including financier Jeffrey Epstein, pop star Justin Bieber, Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves and conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh. His courtroom victories and frequent media appearances made him one of the most recognizable criminal defense lawyers in the United States. “For more than 30 years, Roy was my teacher, mentor and friend,” law partner Howard Srebnick said, calling Black’s professional impact “immeasurable.” Fellow Miami attorney David O. Markus compared him to “the Michael Jordan of criminal defense.” Black is survived by his wife, Lea, their son RJ and a daughter, Nora. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
