German biathlete Laura Dahlmeier, a two-time Olympic champion and seven-time world titleholder, has died after a mountaineering accident on Laila Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range, her management agency and local authorities confirmed on Wednesday. She was 31. Dahlmeier and her climbing partner, Marina Eva Krauss, were ascending the 6,094-metre peak in alpine style on Monday when a sudden rockfall struck at roughly 5,700 metres. Krauss escaped injury and issued a distress call, but low visibility and rain prevented rescue helicopters from reaching the site. Multinational search teams later confirmed Dahlmeier had died, and the operation was halted after her family asked that her written wish—to leave her body on the mountain—be respected. The Bavarian-born athlete made history at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games by becoming the first female biathlete to win both the sprint and pursuit events at a single Olympics. She retired from competition in 2019, finishing her career with 15 world-championship medals, including five golds in 2017, and the overall World Cup crown that same year. Tributes poured in from the International Olympic Committee and the German Olympic Sports Confederation, which praised Dahlmeier’s "heart, attitude and vision." Her death comes amid hazardous weather in northern Pakistan’s climbing season, where heavy monsoon rains have triggered floods, landslides and several recent mountaineering fatalities.
