A 42-year-old climber from Provo, Utah, died while descending an off-trail route on the west face of Mount Gould in Glacier National Park, officials said. Rangers received a report at about 5:54 p.m. on Wednesday that Brian Astle had fallen above the popular Highline Trail, toward the centre of the park. Rescuers from Glacier National Park, the Advanced Life-Support and Emergency Rescue Team and Two Bear Air located Astle that evening but postponed recovery until daylight for safety reasons. A helicopter airlifted his body at roughly 10 a.m. on Thursday and transferred it to the Flathead County coroner. Mount Gould, the highest point along the park’s Garden Wall at 9,557 feet, features steep, exposed terrain. Park officials have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the fall and urged visitors to stay on established routes in high-elevation areas.
