Pakistan has assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July 2025. This marks Pakistan's eighth time serving on the Security Council and its first presidency since 2013. Pakistan began its current two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC in January 2025. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan's permanent representative to the UN, emphasized a focus on peaceful dispute resolution, multilateralism, and global peace during its presidency. The country plans to hold high-level sessions, including an open debate on peace and security scheduled for July 22, chaired by Pakistan's Foreign Minister, which is expected to address the Kashmir issue. Another briefing on cooperation between the UN and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is planned for July 24, also to be chaired by the Foreign Minister. Pakistan's presidency grants it authority to preside over all Security Council meetings, control proceedings, call speakers, and guide discussions, thereby influencing the Council's agenda and direction. Pakistan assumes this role amid ongoing political and economic challenges and heightened geopolitical tensions, including the Kashmir dispute. The UNSC presidency rotates monthly among its 15 members, including five permanent members and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.
