Pakistan is intensifying its defence diplomacy on two fronts in the wake of May’s brief but fierce hostilities with India. Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu has become the first serving chief of the Pakistan Air Force in more than a decade to pay an official visit to the United States. During meetings at the Pentagon, the State Department and Capitol Hill, Sidhu conferred with US Air Force Chief of Staff General David W. Allvin and Secretary of the Air Force (International Affairs) Kelli L. Seybolt on expanding military-to-military cooperation, joint training and technology exchange, according to an Inter-Services Public Relations statement. His trip follows Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s late-June talks with President Donald Trump at the White House, underscoring a concerted effort by Islamabad and Washington to rebuild security ties. US officials credited the Pakistani military leadership with helping to avert wider conflict on the sub-continent, while both sides agreed to maintain high-level engagements amid continuing regional uncertainty. Separately, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Defence Minister Yasar Güler arrived in Islamabad on 9 July for talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and senior service chiefs. The two countries said they would “firm up” defence cooperation, convene a bilateral defence committee in September and work toward lifting annual trade to roughly USD 5 billion. Fidan also urged “meaningful dialogue” between India and Pakistan and thanked Islamabad for its support over Northern Cyprus, signalling Ankara’s broader strategic alignment with Pakistan.
