Elon Musk’s artificial-intelligence firm xAI has rolled out Grok Imagine, a tool that converts images into short video clips and also offers text-to-image generation. The feature, available from 5 August to paying SuperGrok and Premium Plus subscribers on X’s iOS app and in early access on Android, renders videos in about 15–20 seconds and includes automatically generated sound effects. A key differentiator is a ‘Spicy’ mode that explicitly permits nude and sexualised imagery, contrasting with the stricter content filters used by rival services such as Google’s Veo and OpenAI’s Sora. Users can choose among four animation settings—Custom, Normal, Fun and Spicy—after uploading or creating a reference image. Musk has billed the product as an “AI Vine,” saying more than 34 million images were generated in the first days after launch. The announcement reignites debate over guardrails for generative-AI systems. Previous versions of Grok drew criticism for weak safeguards around deep-fake images, and it remains unclear what limits, if any, the new video tool enforces on explicit or celebrity-based content. xAI said earlier this year it was working on clearer consent protocols but has not detailed restrictions for the latest release.
