McClain and her staff attended the Embassy of Qatar's annual Fourth of July celebration, an event marking American Independence Day. McClain's connections to Qatar date back to at least 2021, including a documented trip to Doha sponsored by the U.S.-Qatar Business Council and approved by the House Ethics Committee. Following the leak, the Embassy of Qatar allegedly sent a memo to several members of Congress and lobbyists regarding Qatar’s financing of colleges and universities. Additionally, McClain's Chief of Staff, Nick Hawatadeh, who is Jordanian, has come under scrutiny in relation to the leak. The incident has prompted calls for investigation and demands for McClain's resignation.
