Shane van Gisbergen extended his mastery of NASCAR’s road-course events by dominating Sunday’s Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway. Driving the No. 88 Red Bull-backed Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing, the New Zealander started from pole and led 97 of 110 laps before a late caution set up a 15-lap sprint to the finish. Van Gisbergen elected to stay out on older tyres and comfortably held off Chase Briscoe, with Chase Elliott rounding out the podium. Michael McDowell and Christopher Bell completed the top five. The victory, confirmed after the car cleared post-race inspection, is van Gisbergen’s third of the 2025 season, tying him with Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin and Bell for the series lead in wins. It also marks his third straight triumph on road or street circuits, following a weekend sweep at Chicago’s Grant Park 165 one week earlier. By winning from pole, he matches Jeff Gordon’s record for consecutive road-course wins from the top starting spot. Van Gisbergen’s latest success delivers six additional playoff points to Trackhouse and solidifies Red Bull’s first Cup-series victory as a primary sponsor since 2011. With eight regular-season events remaining, the 35-year-old has established himself as the championship’s benchmark whenever the schedule turns right as well as left.
