William Sawalich captured the ARCA Menards Series West race at Sonoma Raceway on Friday in a dramatic three-wide photo finish, edging Christian Eckes by 0.066 seconds, with Alon Day a further 0.09 seconds back. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver had led most of the event before a late stall by Kyle Keller forced overtime and set up a one-lap sprint to the checkered flag. On the final lap Eckes and Day split Sawalich in the opening corner, sending the polesitter briefly off track. Sawalich recovered to ram the back of Eckes at the hairpin, the trio slamming doors and bouncing off opposite walls as they accelerated to the line. The victory is the 18-year-old’s fourth in ARCA West competition and opens NASCAR’s Sonoma weekend, which continues with the Xfinity Series and Sunday’s Cup-series Toyota/Save Mart 350.
