Romania’s Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice has completed its investigation into Călin Georgescu and sent the former presidential candidate to trial on 2 July. The indictment accuses Georgescu of repeatedly promoting, in public, the cult of war-criminal leaders Ion Antonescu and Corneliu Zelea Codreanu and of disseminating fascist, legionary, racist and xenophobic doctrines. Prosecutors say Georgescu committed five separate acts between June 2020 and May 2025, including televised remarks and a speech in Bucharest’s University Square where he used the legionary salute. The counts fall under Article 5 of Government Emergency Ordinance 31/2002, recently tightened by Law 168/2025, which now expressly outlaws legionary organisations. Because the alleged offence is continuous, the statutory maximum of three years’ imprisonment can be increased by a further three, exposing Georgescu to up to six years behind bars if convicted. Georgescu, once the far-right frontrunner in last year’s first-round presidential vote before his candidacy was annulled, remains under judicial supervision and is barred from leaving the country or posting extremist content online. Separate inquiries into suspected false statements, illegal campaign financing and an alleged plot to undermine constitutional order are continuing.
