Australia have lost starting fly half Noah Lolesio for the forthcoming British & Irish Lions series after the 24-year-old underwent neck surgery on 8 July. Rugby Australia said Lolesio faces “a period of time away from the game” but is expected to make a full recovery. His injury, sustained in a warm-up match against Fiji, deprives head coach Joe Schmidt of his first-choice playmaker for the three-Test series that opens in Brisbane on 19 July. Schmidt is now weighing his options at No. 10, with local reports pointing to a recall for 35-year-old James O’Connor. The touring Lions have fitness worries of their own: Scotland full-back Blair Kinghorn is battling to overcome a sprained knee picked up on 9 July. Defence coach Simon Easterby said Kinghorn’s availability for the first Test will be assessed “day by day,” with Ireland’s Hugo Keenan and newly-called-up Jamie Osborne providing cover.
