Russia’s Federal Security Service said it thwarted several sabotage and espionage attempts it attributes to Ukrainian intelligence, carrying out operations in the Moscow region, St Petersburg and Novorossiysk between 25 and 26 June. The agency reported that two Russian citizens were killed in a shoot-out on 25 June after they allegedly tried to retrieve a homemade bomb from a cache near Moscow. The men, described as accomplices of Ukrainian special services, supposedly planned to attack a Russian serviceman. Officers seized the device, firearms, ammunition and communications equipment. In St Petersburg, a 47-year-old Russian woman was detained on 26 June on suspicion of collecting addresses and vehicle details of Defence Ministry personnel for potential terrorist attacks. Investigators opened a case under Article 205.1 part 3 of the criminal code, and a court placed her in pre-trial custody. The same day, security officers in Novorossiysk arrested a local resident accused of sending information on Black Sea Fleet vessels and air-defence facilities to Ukrainian handlers. Separately, two Moldovan nationals were taken into custody for allegedly entering Russia on false documents to carry out tasks “directed against the security of the Russian Federation.” Kyiv and Chisinau have not commented on the FSB claims, which could not be independently verified.
