The Kremlin on Monday played down U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that he had ordered two American nuclear submarines to reposition near Russia, saying such vessels are routinely on combat duty. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Moscow had no wish to engage in a public dispute with Trump but cautioned that “everyone should be very, very careful” when invoking nuclear rhetoric. Peskov’s comments followed Trump’s announcement last Friday, made after former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev warned of the risk of war between the nuclear-armed powers. The Kremlin said it does not regard Trump’s statement as an escalation, yet urged restraint given the sensitivity of nuclear issues. The exchange comes ahead of a Friday deadline set by Trump for Russia to end its 3-½-year war in Ukraine or face additional U.S. sanctions that could also target major buyers of Russian oil such as India and China. Trump’s envoy, real-estate executive Steve Witkoff, is expected in Moscow later this week for talks; the Kremlin indicated President Vladimir Putin may meet him but offered no details of the agenda.
