Speaking at the Alaska Summit on 15 August, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated that Moscow regards Ukrainians as a “brotherly nation” and said Russia is “sincerely interested” in ending the war. Putin added that a durable settlement requires addressing what he called the conflict’s “primary causes” and taking Russia’s security concerns into account. He said the Kremlin is ready to work on measures that would also guarantee Ukraine’s security, and urged Kyiv and European negotiators not to undermine the talks currently under way. Putin noted that he and former U.S. President Donald Trump share the view that any agreement must ensure Ukraine’s safety alongside Russia’s.
Putin: "The situation in Ukraine has to do with fundamental threats to our security. We've always considered the Ukrainian nation a brotherly nation...In order to make the settlement lasting and long-term, we need to eliminate all the primary causes of this conflict." https://t.co/Cuh62bzijQ
Putin: In order to make a lasting settlement, we must eliminate primary causes of the conflict in Ukraine. We are prepared to work on Ukraine’s security as well. We hope Ukraine and Europeans don’t throw a wrench in the works to torpedo the talks in progress.
