The United Nations said it “took note” of the 15 August summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska and welcomed the continuation of direct dialogue between the two leaders. Spokesman Stéphane Dujarric added that Secretary-General António Guterres repeated his call for an immediate cease-fire in Ukraine and offered UN support for any meaningful peace effort. The meeting, which lasted two hours and 45 minutes, was the first encounter between Trump and Putin since the U.S. president returned to office in January. According to Russian and U.S. readouts, the talks focused on finding a durable settlement to the Ukraine conflict and on broader security guarantees for Europe, although no binding agreements were announced. The United Arab Emirates also endorsed the summit. The Foreign Ministry said the joint efforts of Trump and Putin “represent a source of hope” for global stability, while presidential adviser Anwar Gargash expressed confidence that Trump’s initiative could advance peace in Ukraine. Gargash recalled that the UAE had earlier mediated a prisoner-of-war exchange between Moscow and Kyiv and stood ready to facilitate further confidence-building steps.
