Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview broadcast by NBC News on 22 August that there is “no agenda at all” for a potential summit between President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and therefore no meeting is planned. Lavrov insisted that Putin remains willing to meet once a detailed agenda is prepared, but he claimed Kyiv had blocked progress. According to the minister, Zelensky recently rejected every principle Washington proposed for advancing peace—including discussion of Ukraine’s NATO aspirations, territorial arrangements and language policy—telling negotiators “no to everything.” The remarks cast doubt on U.S. President Donald Trump’s effort to broker a face-to-face between the two leaders after his 15 August meeting with Putin in Alaska and subsequent talks with Zelensky and European allies in Washington. While Moscow says it is ready to show “flexibility” on several points Trump raised, Lavrov argued that any security guarantees for Ukraine devised without Russia’s participation are “a road to nowhere.”
