Russia carried out one of its heaviest air assaults on Ukraine since the start of the war, launching 598 drones and 31 missiles against Kyiv and other targets overnight, according to Ukraine’s Air Force. The barrage—629 attack weapons in total—killed at least 15 people, among them four children, and wounded roughly 48, local authorities said. Strikes hit more than 20 locations across seven districts of the capital, tearing through apartment blocks, a shopping center, a kindergarten and key infrastructure. The headquarters of the European Union’s mission to Ukraine and the British Council building sustained blast damage, though no diplomatic staff were hurt. A five-storey residential building in the Darnytskyi district suffered a direct hit, leaving residents trapped under rubble as rescue teams worked through the morning. Ukraine’s air defences shot down 563 drones and 26 missiles, but officials said debris and missiles that evaded interception caused extensive damage. Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed the attack targeted military industrial sites and air bases; Kyiv described the assault as indiscriminate and aimed largely at civilian areas. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike as proof that Moscow “chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table” and urged fresh international sanctions. The attack was the first major combined strike on Kyiv in several weeks and the second-largest single-night use of drones and missiles in the conflict, underscoring the fragility of recent U.S.-brokered efforts to revive peace talks.
