Ukraine said its drones struck a major oil refinery in Russia’s Saratov region before dawn on 10 August, igniting a blaze that sent thick smoke over the city. Video verified by open-source analysts showed multiple impact flashes and fires across the site, which has a design capacity of about 140,000 barrels of crude a day and is operated by Rosneft PJSC. Saratov governor Roman Busargin confirmed an attack on what he called an “industrial enterprise,” saying one civilian was killed, two people were injured and flights at the local airport were temporarily delayed. Emergency crews were still working to extinguish the fire several hours later. The raid is the latest in a month-long Ukrainian campaign aimed at Russia’s energy infrastructure, which Kyiv says is intended to curb Moscow’s ability to fuel its forces and finance the war. Kyiv hit the Ryazan and Novokuibyshevsk refineries earlier this month, according to the Ukrainian General Staff. Russian officials reported a broader wave of overnight drone activity. Two people died in the adjoining Tula region and another in Nizhny Novgorod when drones crashed near industrial zones there, while Moscow’s mayor said air-defence units downed seven drones approaching the capital. The Defence Ministry put the total number of Ukrainian drones intercepted across the country at 59. Ukraine rarely comments on operations inside Russia, but its General Staff described the Saratov strike as successful. The cross-border attacks come days before a planned summit in Alaska between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, underscoring the difficulty of containing the conflict as it enters its fourth year.
