On August 3, 2025, Ukrainian forces launched a drone attack on a fuel depot located at Sochi airport in southern Russia, resulting in a fire that required over 120 firefighters to combat. The blaze was reportedly ignited after debris from a downed drone struck a fuel tank. Russian authorities confirmed that firefighters eventually extinguished the fire. Subsequently, on August 5, Ukrainian drones also targeted locations in Russia's Rostov region, causing additional fires. Meanwhile, on the same day, Russian forces conducted drone strikes on the Izmail district in Ukraine's Odesa Oblast, damaging a gas and oil pipeline and causing a large-scale fire visible from across the Romanian border. Ukraine's Energy Ministry reported that Russian drones hit a gas station in southern Ukraine used to import liquefied natural gas from the U.S., Azerbaijan, and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that Russia's attack on the gas facility in Odesa was intended to undermine Ukraine's winter preparations.
