Ukraine has stepped up long-range drone attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, striking four major facilities in less than a week and pushing some of them offline, according to statements from Kyiv and regional Russian officials. The campaign began overnight on 10 Aug when drones hit Rosneft’s 140,000-barrel-a-day Saratov refinery, sparking fires, temporary flight delays and killing at least one person, the local governor said. Kyiv’s military later confirmed the strike. Before dawn on 13 Aug, Ukraine said it targeted the Unecha pumping station in Bryansk Oblast, a key hub on the Druzhba pipeline that feeds European customers. Regional authorities reported a fire but pipeline operators in Hungary and Slovakia said crude flows were unaffected. Hours later, on 14 Aug, debris from downed drones ignited a blaze at Lukoil’s 300,000-barrel-a-day Volgograd refinery. Russia’s defence ministry said air defences destroyed 44 Ukrainian drones that night, including nine over Volgograd; no casualties were reported. The latest strike came early on 15 Aug, when up to ten drones set the Syzran refinery in Samara Oblast ablaze, more than 850 km from the front line. Kyiv acknowledged the attack as part of what it calls efforts to curb Russian fuel supplies for the war effort. Industry analysts estimate that the outages at Saratov and other plants could cut Russian refined-product output and shift as much as 200,000 barrels a day of crude to seaborne export markets. The escalation also coincides with a planned Trump-Putin summit in Alaska, underscoring the widening energy front in the 30-month-old conflict.
